Week One Round-Up: Training Tools You Won’t Find at Your Gym

Mount Yonah Training, Functional Training Tools

WEEK ONE: WE’RE OFFICIALLY LIVE

Well, we did it. Week one of our content calendar is officially in the books.

This first week was all about proving a point: there’s no “one true way” to train. Different tools serve different purposes. Different bodies need different approaches.

From resistance bands to smart bells to loaded carries to mobility work – here’s what we published this past week.

Friday: JC BANDS CHEST PRESS (December 19)

We kicked things off with JC Bands – specialty resistance tools that give you variable resistance throughout the movement. Translation: unlike dumbbells or barbells where the weight stays the same, bands fight you differently at different points in the rep.

Why we love them:

  • Portable (toss them in a bag, train anywhere)
  • Joint-friendly (especially for shoulders)
  • Scalable (works for beginners AND advanced athletes)
  • Versatile (dozens of exercises with one band)

The chest press isn’t trying to replace bench press. It’s giving you another option. Because OPTIONS are the point.

Monday: SMART BELLS BY THINKFIT (December 22)

Smart Bells by ThinkFit are sculptural, ergonomically designed weights that we’ve had since the early 2000s. They’re designed for flowing, circular movements rather than traditional lifting – think smooth halos around your head instead of strict presses.

Why we love them:

  • Unique curved shape promotes natural, fluid movement
  • Low-impact and joint-friendly (perfect for all ages)
  • Full-body engagement through functional patterns
  • Great for mobility work, light strength, and coordination
  • Leave you energized, not exhausted

This video demonstrated a halo pattern – moving the bells in circles around your head. It engages your shoulders, core, and stabilizer muscles through smooth, controlled motion. The kind of movement that translates to real-world coordination and shoulder health.

These aren’t your typical dumbbells. They’re designed for quality of movement over quantity of weight. And after 20+ years, ours are still going strong.

CHRISTMAS EVE: FARMER’S WALK (December 24)

On Christmas Eve, we gave you one of the most brutally simple, effective exercises in existence: the Farmer’s Walk.

Pick up heavy things. Walk with them. That’s it.

But here’s the thing – this IS your life:

  • Carrying groceries from the car
  • Moving boxes during a move
  • Hauling luggage through an airport
  • Holding a squirming toddler for 20 minutes

Life is loaded carries. Training them makes you more capable when it actually matters.

Plus, the timing was perfect. All those Christmas gifts? Someone’s gotta carry them. Might as well be the person who trains for it. 🎁

FRIDAY: SHOULDER WARM-UP WITH HEROIC SPORT TRAVEL HANDLES (December 27)

Post-Christmas, we shifted to injury prevention. Because your shoulders are the most mobile joints in your body – which also makes them the most vulnerable.

Before you load them with weight, they deserve preparation.

Using Heroic Sport Travel Handles (lightweight, portable tools), we walked through a comprehensive shoulder warm-up that:

  • Increases blood flow to the joint
  • Lubricates the capsule
  • Activates stabilizer muscles
  • Gets you ready for loaded work

This isn’t just for athletes. It’s for anyone who uses their shoulders. Which is everyone. Whether you’re 25 or 75, shoulder health matters.

And “travel handles” means exactly what it sounds like – you can do this in a hotel room, a park, your garage. Wherever you are. No excuses.

THE PATTERN: EQUIPMENT VARIETY = ADAPTABILITY

Look at what we covered in four videos:

  1. JC Bands (specialty resistance)
  2. Smart Bells (flowing movement)
  3. Loaded carries (farmer’s walk implements)
  4. Heroic Sport Travel Handles (mobility tools)

Four videos. Four completely different tools. That’s intentional.

We don’t believe in “the one true way” to train. Different tools serve different purposes. Different bodies respond to different stimuli. Different goals require different approaches.

What we DO believe in:

✓ Functional fitness that serves your actual life
✓ Training appropriate for YOUR body and goals
✓ Equipment variety to prevent plateaus and boredom
✓ Injury prevention as the foundation
✓ Capability over appearance
✓ Serving clients from 18 to over 100 years old

This is tactical fitness. This is Spartan Mind Strength. This is what we do at Mount Yonah Training.
