ayurveda yoga vegetarianism

I have been officially teaching Ayurveda for over a decade, and this is something that has been brought up in pretty much every Ayurveda class I have taught.

What type of diet does Ayurveda advocate?

There seems to be a widespread ongoing belief that Ayurveda says one should follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.

This however is a misconception that commodity ayurveda has created and it could not be any further away from the truth.

The quick video below explains to you what type of foods traditional Ayurveda recommends. No prior ayurvedic knowledge required. 🙂

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:06.109
Hi everyone. I have been officially
teaching Ayurveda for over a decade. And

00:00:06.109 --> 00:00:11.280
this is something that has been brought
up in pretty much every Ayurveda class

00:00:11.280 --> 00:00:20.250
I have taught. What type of diet does
Ayurveda advocate? There seems to be a

00:00:20.250 --> 00:00:27.269
widespread ongoing belief that Ayurveda
says one should follow a vegetarian or

00:00:27.269 --> 00:00:35.100
vegan diet. This however is a
misconception that commodity Ayurveda

00:00:35.100 --> 00:00:43.469
has created and it could not be any
further away from the truth. Traditional

00:00:43.469 --> 00:00:52.370
Ayurveda, the oldest form of medical
science says that one should eat

00:00:52.370 --> 00:01:03.140
wholesome food. The term wholesome does
not imply whole, raw, plant-based,

00:01:03.140 --> 00:01:11.090
ketogenic, or anything fashionable like
that. It does not even refer to any

00:01:11.090 --> 00:01:18.420
particular ratio or combination of
proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and

00:01:18.420 --> 00:01:27.740
minerals. The definition of wholesome
involves several factors that take into

00:01:27.740 --> 00:01:38.670
consideration three main components: The
person who will receive the food, the

00:01:38.670 --> 00:01:51.450
food itself, and the surrounding context
of the energy exchange. For example, in

00:01:51.450 --> 00:01:59.579
terms of the food itself: Traditional
Ayurveda looks at the twenty qualities, the

00:01:59.579 --> 00:02:07.940
six tastes, and the method of preparation.
When we say twenty qualities we refer to

00:02:07.940 --> 00:02:17.440
properties such as hot cold dry moist
heavy light etc. In terms of the person

00:02:17.440 --> 00:02:23.530
that will receive the food traditional
Ayurvedic takes into consideration their

00:02:23.530 --> 00:02:32.380
physical emotional and mental
disposition and their main activity. Think

00:02:32.380 --> 00:02:41.730
age gender disease tendency lifestyle
habits etc. In terms of the surrounding

00:02:41.730 --> 00:02:50.260
context traditional Ayurveda accounts for
space and time as in geographical

00:02:50.260 --> 00:02:58.260
location time of day and season.Think
desert versus seashore or high-altitude

00:02:58.260 --> 00:03:07.209
hot summer versus freezing winter. As you
can see according to traditional Ayurveda

00:03:07.209 --> 00:03:11.890
there is no such thing as black and

00:03:11.890 --> 00:03:21.870
white. Everything is gray. Everything is
about a dynamic balance between the

00:03:21.870 --> 00:03:31.600
individual and their environment. What
works for one person at one context will

00:03:31.600 --> 00:03:40.320
not work for another person at a
different context. The truth is personal

00:03:40.320 --> 00:03:50.440
contemporary and relative. What traditional Ayurveda teaches us is that

00:03:50.440 --> 00:04:00.280
food carries subtle energies. These
energies interact with the energies

00:04:00.280 --> 00:04:12.370
within us to impact the quality of our
experience, our own experience. In other

00:04:12.370 --> 00:04:24.310
words our own body our own emotions our
own senses and our own mind. What this

00:04:24.310 --> 00:04:32.710
means is that whether the energies that
we take in come from the animal kingdom

00:04:32.710 --> 00:04:42.600
the plant kingdom or the mineral kingdom
we want them to be as wholesome as

00:04:42.600 --> 00:04:51.430
possible. What happened to traditional
Ayurveda? Traditional Ayurveda got

00:04:51.430 --> 00:04:58.510
distorted during the medieval period of
the Hindu culture, which lasted from

00:04:58.510 --> 00:05:07.990
about 500 AD to the early 18th century.
This is when a lot of the systematized

00:05:07.990 --> 00:05:15.540
knowledge of traditional Ayurveda was
forgotten and replaced by folklore

00:05:15.540 --> 00:05:25.720
superstition and personal opinions.
Commodity Ayurveda. This non factual

00:05:25.720 --> 00:05:35.890
information, still fully unexamined is
being passed on as truth from guru to

00:05:35.890 --> 00:05:44.410
student, who in turn becomes a guru and
passes on the same false data to the

00:05:44.410 --> 00:05:49.680
next student, and so on and so on.

00:05:50.550 --> 00:05:59.950
Unfortunately repetition makes a "fact"
seem more true regardless of whether it

00:05:59.950 --> 00:06:07.960
is, or not. To learn more about
