They say that the secret ingredient of every great pie is love. We disagree. We believe it is lard. 🙂 Either way, almost all of us would agree that a freshly baked pie will put us into a state of gratitude. But how about the rest of the time?
“Be in a state of gratitude for everything that shows up in your life.” -Wayne Dyer
Sounds wonderful, what a great little quote, but easier said than done! Hard to remember and quick to forget. We tend to remind ourselves and each other all about gratitude during the major holidays when love and appreciation are in the air. As soon as the calendar page turns, it all disappears.
So the question is, how do we keep gratitude alive every moment of the day? Just like everything else in life, all it takes is practice. Practice makes permanent.
Wayne Dyer says
“Be thankful for the storms as well as the smooth sailing. What is the lesson or gift in what you are experiencing right now? Find your joy not in what’s missing in your life but in how you can serve.”
Some say gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind. So when we think with our heart and not with our mind, we remain in a state of gratitude.
In the yogic philosophy of Patanjali and the Yoga Sutras we would look at the “nyama santosha” नियम सन्तोष which means the “practice of contentment”. In “contentment” we are thankful for everything we have, the life we have created, every one we come in contact with and everything that happens to us.
Poet John Milton says
“Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.”
We believe that gratitude leads to resilience which in turn leads to higher performance.
Whichever your reason is for cultivating gratitude, we all agree on one thing. We all need our little reminders, some of us more often than others. Whether it be it a pie, a book, a poem, the Yoga Sutras or a gratitude stone that you carry with you, use it to keep the practice of gratitude alive.
