Full moons and new moons have
historically been a sources of great

00:00:09.480 –> 00:00:18.720
creative energy and inspiration for
every culture. The Vedic system is a

00:00:18.720 –> 00:00:26.189
prime example. They actually seem to
celebrate every aspect of every moon,

00:00:26.189 –> 00:00:36.620
with one of the most popular observances
being that of Guru Purnima. Guru Purnima

00:00:36.620 –> 00:00:44.489
constitutes a very intriguing occasion.
There are several interpretations for

00:00:44.489 –> 00:00:51.360
the Sanskrit word guru.
Etymologically, it has the same origin as

00:00:51.360 –> 00:01:02.520
the Latin word gravis — heavy, grave,
serious — and the Greek word varis — again

00:01:02.520 –> 00:01:12.510
heavy, serious. All three, the Sanskrit,
Latin and Greek words, derived from the

00:01:12.510 –> 00:01:18.720
same Proto-
Indo-European root. Think, heavy as in

00:01:18.720 –> 00:01:25.619
heavy with knowledge.
Another popular interpretation, is that

00:01:25.619 –> 00:01:34.829
GU means ignorance and RU means
dispeller, with guru then meaning, the one

00:01:34.829 –> 00:01:43.820
who dispels ignorance. No matter which
way you look at it, no matter how

00:01:43.820 –> 00:01:51.479
scholarly you decide to get, the word
guru in the Vedic system has

00:01:51.479 –> 00:01:59.479
historically been associated with a
respected, highly esteemed teacher.

00:01:59.479 –> 00:02:08.300
Moving on to Purnima. Purnima in Sanskrit,
means full moon. Guru Purnima is

00:02:08.300 –> 00:02:17.320
therefore, the full moon dedicated to
the teacher. Calendar-wise, it is

00:02:17.320 –> 00:02:25.490
associated with the Vedic month
of Ashadha, the fourth lunar month, usually

00:02:25.490 –> 00:02:35.260
occurring somewhere around June-July.
Interestingly enough, ashadha in Sanskrit

00:02:35.260 –> 00:02:44.960
also means victorious, almost implying
that the energies imparted by the full

00:02:44.960 –> 00:02:55.220
moon that is dedicated to the teacher,
will help us become victorious. Swami

00:02:55.220 –> 00:03:03.860
Vivekananda, the late 19th century Indian
monk who inspired millions by bridging

00:03:03.860 –> 00:03:15.860
cultural gaps, once said: “You have to grow
from the inside out. None can teach you.

00:03:15.860 –> 00:03:26.870
None can make you spiritual. There is no
other teacher but your own soul.” And that

00:03:26.870 –> 00:03:35.780
is so true. We only learn, we only grow,
through our personal experience .We may

00:03:35.780 –> 00:03:42.470
read all the books we want, take all the
classes we can, hire all the teachers we

00:03:42.470 –> 00:03:52.250
can afford, but unless we think it, feel
it, and live it, nothing will change. All

00:03:52.250 –> 00:04:02.150
the knowledge we are seeking is dormant
within us, waiting to be awakened through

00:04:02.150 –> 00:04:12.920
the proper stimulus. That stimulus is to
come from the outside world. Every rock,

00:04:12.920 –> 00:04:22.460
every tree, every animal, every person
around us, is giving us that stimulus, all

00:04:22.460 –> 00:04:29.350
the time.
It is time to move past the likes and

00:04:29.350 –> 00:04:38.050
dislikes, and quit to always try to
explain everything that happens through

00:04:38.050 –> 00:04:47.970
our modern form of consciousness.
The full moon in the sky reminds us that

00:04:47.970 –> 00:04:58.710
facing the dark and accepting it need
not be scary. it just might help us

00:04:58.710 –> 00:05:12.130
further appreciate the light as a place
where we can live always. No one can ever

00:05:12.130 –> 00:05:22.000
phrase it better than Swami Vivekananda.
He said: “All the powers in the universe

00:05:22.000 –> 00:05:34.750
are already ours. It is we, who have put
our hands before our eyes, and cry that

00:05:34.750 –> 00:05:41.800
it is dark.
So on Guru Purnima day, spend some quiet

00:05:41.800 –> 00:05:52.750
time, just a few minutes, and reflect upon
how often you put your hands before your

00:05:52.750 –> 00:06:05.650
eyes, ending up with false understanding,
lost in deserts. It may be time to dig a

00:06:05.650 –> 00:06:16.560
little deeper, allow our subconscious,
infallible drives guide us and trust

00:06:16.560 –> 00:06:28.780
what Nietzsche called, our “divine animal”,
our own personal teacher. To learn more

all be well.
