Raja Ayurveda Asks: How Often Do You Eat?

One of Ayurveda’s most important tissues, is the Meda Dhatu. Dhatu is the Sanskrit word for tissue and Meda means fat, as in our adipose tissue.

Adipose tissue is the part of our body that is composed of adipocytes, or adipose cells. There are three different types of adipocytes and they all have specifc roles.

Ayurveda says that our Meda Dhatu, our Adipose tissue is what gives us nourishment, lubrication, groundedness, perception, and compassion.

It all sounds like stuff we want, right?

Yet, why are we all so paranoid about the fat in our body or eating fat? Well, the problem is that not all fat is created equally, in terms of the fat we eat and the fat we store.

00:00:00.000 –> 00:00:07.470
Hi Every One! Today we are going to talk
about one of Ayurveda’s most important

00:00:07.470 –> 00:00:19.199
tissues, the meda dhatu. Dhatu is the
Sanskrit word for tissue. Meda is the

00:00:19.199 –> 00:00:31.740
sanskrit word for fat, or adipose. Meda
dhatu is our adipose tissue. Our adipose

00:00:31.740 –> 00:00:40.079
tissue is the part of our body that is
composed of adipocytes, or adipose cells

00:00:40.079 –> 00:00:49.640
and it is pretty much everywhere in our
body. There are three different types of

00:00:49.640 –> 00:00:58.500
adipocytes and they all have specific
roles. Ayurveda says that our meda

00:00:58.500 –> 00:01:10.010
dhatu, our adipose tissue is what gives us
nourishment, lubrication, groundedness,

00:01:10.010 –> 00:01:21.259
perception, and compassion. It all sounds
like stuff we want, right? Yet we are all so

00:01:21.259 –> 00:01:36.869
paranoid about the fat in our body or
the fat we eat. The problem is that we

00:01:36.869 –> 00:01:52.110
are both right and wrong. Yes fat can be
bad, yes we can store excess fat, because

00:01:52.110 –> 00:02:03.540
not all fat is created equal. And this is
the case for both the fat we eat and the

00:02:03.540 –> 00:02:13.770
fat we store. We end up storing a lot
more fat than our body needs.

00:02:13.770 –> 00:02:18.560
And this is all our fault.

00:02:18.830 –> 00:02:32.460
We eat too often. So the problem isn’t
necessarily with the fat itself, with the

00:02:32.460 –> 00:02:41.610
fat that we eat. The problem is that we
eat too often. And when we say the

00:02:41.610 –> 00:02:49.800
problem is not necessarily with the fat
we eat, it is if we eat the fat that

00:02:49.800 –> 00:03:00.330
nature intended for us to eat. So
assuming that we eat good fat, the

00:03:00.330 –> 00:03:13.040
problem is that we eat too often. Ayurveda says, eat only when you’re hungry,

00:03:13.040 –> 00:03:29.160
and allow 12 hours for your food to be
digested. If you think about it, this

00:03:29.160 –> 00:03:46.500
means, eat no more than two to three
meals a day. This means that each day, we

00:03:46.500 –> 00:03:57.990
should allow a section of at least 12
hours, when we do not put in food into

00:03:57.990 –> 00:04:09.180
our body that requires to be digested.
This means that drinking water, black

00:04:09.180 –> 00:04:20.510
coffee, and tea it is perfectly fine as
long as the tea is not of fruit origin.

00:04:21.080 –> 00:04:27.370
Ayurveda says that we are all created of
the five

00:04:27.370 –> 00:04:41.949
elements, ether or space, air, fire, water
and earth. And we need to keep the

00:04:41.949 –> 00:04:53.110
dynamic balance of those five elements
within our body. This means that we need

00:04:53.110 –> 00:04:59.260
to be bringing in the earth element, we
need to be bringing in the water

00:04:59.260 –> 00:05:07.210
element, the fire element, the air element
and the space element. And we understand,

00:05:07.210 –> 00:05:13.570
yes the water element comes in through
the water we drink, the juices; the earth

00:05:13.570 –> 00:05:23.830
element comes in through the food we eat,
etc. How do we bring in the space element

00:05:23.830 –> 00:05:39.940
in our body? By allowing space in our
digestive system. We need to be giving

00:05:39.940 –> 00:05:51.240
our digestive system the time it needs
to do its job. We need to be giving our

00:05:51.240 –> 00:06:04.590
body the time it needs to repair itself,
without having to divert its energy to

00:06:04.590 –> 00:06:15.820
process food that we bring in. And this
is the case regardless of whether the

00:06:15.820 –> 00:06:27.130
food that we put in is perfectly clean
or not. That’s why we said that even when

00:06:27.130 –> 00:06:39.400
we are eating good nutritious fat, it is
still necessary to give our body a

00:06:39.400 –> 00:06:52.800
break. Otherwise, no matter how clean the
food that we eat is, it will turn into

00:06:52.800 –> 00:07:06.130
toxins. And those toxins take the form of
excess meda dhatu, excess adipose tissue

00:07:06.130 –> 00:07:18.160
in our body. So then the meda dhatu,
the adipose tissue cannot fulfill its

00:07:18.160 –> 00:07:31.030
purpose, which is nourishment, lubrication,
groundedness, compassion, stability. Ayurveda

00:07:31.030 –> 00:07:41.800
says that our body needs space, we
need to be eating only when we are

00:07:41.800 –> 00:07:54.160
hungry, and every day allow for at least
a 12 hour window when we do not put in

00:07:54.160 –> 00:08:05.650
any food in terms of calories, just water,
black coffee, and tea that is not of

00:08:05.650 –> 00:08:16.570
fruit origin. How many meals a day do you
