Ayurveda & The Mind – Does Misery Really Need Company?

You have certainly experienced it at least once in your life. Whether it was you, or someone very dear to you… You or they were feeling down. So they picked up the phone to call somebody who was feeling down as well, to commiserate with. It turns out that after a long conversation of both parties mutually empathizing for the unfortunate circumstances that life has presented them with, they ended up feeling even worse than before the call.

This is indeed a book picture of what Ayurveda calls, the Law of Similars, which states

Like increases Like

This is exactly why the old cliche “misery loves company” has survived. Like does attract like. And like definitely increases like.

However, the question arises, “does like really need like”? Does “misery really need company“?

Think about it… If you are feeling bad, would you want to end up feeling even worse? It does not make sense, does it?

Ayurveda comes to the rescue again, with its Law of the Opposites, which states

Opposites Balance

Again, this is something that you have certainly experienced at least once in your life. Whether it was you, or someone very dear to you… You or they were feeling down. So they picked themselves up, and hit the gym, or the beach, or the park. It turns out that after a strenuous workout session, or adequate time admiring the wonder of nature, they ended up feeling better than before.
